Flowcrete supplied a high-performance floor to the iconic Swedish furniture retailer IKEA for its store in the Tsuen Wan area of Hong Kong. The new store, which is in CWD Building’s 8 ½ shopping mall, offers customers furniture, home furnishings, a food hall and children’s playroom.

Building materials for this project needed to be hard wearing and provide sufficient grip for customer and staff safety. The flooring also needed to reflect IKEA’s brand identity and familiar grey tones

A variety of materials were combined to ensure the final surface would be robust and aesthetically pleasing. To achieve flooring throughout the customer facing areas to specification, Flowcrete Asia supplied 4,000 m2 each of a fast curing screed, robust epoxy finish and a polyurethane floor sealer.

This floor specification was selected due to its ability to remain attractive and effective for a long period of time. During this time it will cope with heavy foot traffic, impacts, wheeled equipment, display point loading, scratches, scrapes and frequent cleaning.

The project began by applying the rapid-curing screed system Isocrete K-Screed. This semi-dry cementitious screed incorporates proprietary additives to produce an early drying, high strength screed layer. A faster drying time enables the flooring project to be completed much quicker than a traditional screed system would allow.

The screed was then coated with the seamless epoxy system Flowshield SL and a Flowseal UV Matt sealer. Flowshield SL is a self smoothing system that creates a decorative, hard wearing finish. This is ideal for environments that require a flat, level, easy to clean surface.

The seamless, impervious and level format of Flowshield SL enables the store’s cleaning regime to quickly and easily wash away any dirt or contaminants keeping the store looking fresh and brand new. This three-part flooring specification meant that IKEA could rest assured that the finish underfoot would maintain an attractive and effective surface for an extended period of time.

A stores flooring plays an important role in the design of retail environments. Usually the largest surface on site, it provides a back drop for the products on sale. Any unsightly, unclean floor will distract customers and have a negative impact on profitability.

It took only 30 days to finish the flooring project and provide IKEA with an on-brand, high performance finish in plenty of time for the store’s opening day.
