World’s First Copper-Nanodiamond Coating

Manchester based BEP Surface Technologies and Helsinki based Carbodeon have partnered in a project to develop the world’s first copper-nanodiamond composite coating. The two businesses will pool their expertise and resources to bring this incredible coating to market.

What will the Copper-Nanodiamond coating be used for?

The Copper-Nanodiamond coating is designed to enhance the performance of metal components such as turbines, large rotors, and shafts, which are used in industries like nuclear and green energy, defense, food production, and printing/packaging. It is also poised to benefit emerging sectors such as deep-sea and lunar mining. The coating’s superior durability, corrosion resistance, and thermal conductivity make it highly effective for these applications.

Why nanodiamonds?

Incorporating nanodiamonds into metal coatings allows for transformative improvements not achievable with traditional coatings. These nanodiamonds, small enough that a million of them could fit on a pinhead, possess unique structures that enhance thermal conductivity and significantly improve wear resistance.

The partnership

Both parties have joined forces by way of an MoU (memorandum of understanding), a more formal gentleman’s agreement. The partnership will see BEP Surface Technologies metal surface finishing expertise merged with Carbodeon’s nanodiamond additives manufacturing capabilities to produce the new Copper-Nanodiamond Coating. Exclusive UK rights to process nanodiamond-infused electroless nickel will be given to BEP. While Carbodeon will use the produce of project to push forward with their global programs and ambitions.

About BEP Surface Technologies

Founded in 1978 by John Williams in Manchester, UK, BEP Surface Technologies (originally known as Bury Electroplating Company) offers a wide range of plating services, including hard chrome, nickel, and copper. Their work spans from servicing large energy sector components like turbines and rotors to small rotating equipment.

BEP also manufactures and services copper-shelled heat transfer and chill rolls for various industries and has the ability to electroform seamless copper tubes to any thickness required by clients.

Says Andrew McClusky:
I am delighted that Carbodeon has agreed to work with us to develop methods to create a novel composite surface material which we believe is a world first and has the potential to revolutionise a multitude of applications across multiple industries.

This new relationship is further evidence of BEP’s commitment to leveraging half a century of engineering know-how, leading-edge digital techniques, and a research and development mindset to find innovative solutions to metal surface engineering challenges.

About Carbodeon

Established in 2006 by Vesa Myllymäki, Carbodeon operates out of Helsinki and Vantaa, Finland. The company produces its own patented nanodiamond powders and dispersions, marketed under the uDiamond® brand. These mono-functionalized products are used to improve the performance of a wide array of materials and coatings.
