Growing Demand

With increasing demand in the market for EV battery coatings with higher dielectric strength to enhance battery safety, AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings division has responded by creating a solution that allows customers to achieve the required film thickness with one spray, thereby improving efficiency and productivity.

Currently available in China, this new technology is suitable for various battery system components, including cooling plates, side plates, and enclosures.

Product Range

The product line includes:

  • Resicoat EVcell – Resicoat EVcell powder coatings offer superior cell-to-cell electrical insulation for all types of EV battery designs, including cylindrical and prismatic cells. With high dielectric strength, excellent adhesion, and resistance to thermal shocks, they provide reliable protection and efficiency.
  • Resicoat EVpack – These coatings effectively insulate batteries to prevent overheating, enhance safety, and extend lifespan. Resicoat EVpack also protects against corrosion and chemical damage.
  • Resicoat EVcooling – Engineered to deliver optimal thermal conductivity along with top-notch electrical insulation, Resicoat EVcooling resists corrosion, its passed rigorous tests, including the UL 94 vertical burn test (V-0) and a UL 746B temperature index rating of 130°C (Class B).
  • Resicoat EVbusbar – For busbars of various types—from silver-plated to plain copper—these coatings ensure reliable electrical distribution, adhering to stringent industry standards including UL 1446 Class F, UL 94 (V-0), and UL 746B Class B.
  • Resicoat EVmotor – Provide the right edge coverage, flow, and gel time, ensuring the critical air gap is maintained to protect against any potential arcing and offer robust heat, chemicals, corrosion and moisture resistance.

About EV Battery Coatings

EV battery coatings are specially formulated for electrical insulation applications and offer dielectric insulating properties. They provide superior protection for electrical components with excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance, and chemical resistance, along with a balanced mix of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. These coatings are mainly used for insulating aluminum and copper bus bars and other steel barrier materials. AkzoNobel collaborates with leading automotive companies, including Tesla and Chrysler, to deliver these advanced solutions.

What they had to say…

Jeff Jirak, Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business.
Jeff Jirak

Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business, Jeff Jirak, explains;

We’ve developed innovative technology which addresses a clear need within the industry and helps to improve safety. It’s an important breakthrough which means customers no longer have to spray twice or more to achieve the right thickness for providing high dielectric strength.

The technology’s ability to build a consistent film with one-time application also means the entire process is more efficient in terms of increasing speed and production capacity, reducing man hours and improving asset utilization.

Thanks to decades of knowledge and non-stop innovation, we understand how exceptional powder coatings, combined with the right application technique, can provide consistent electrical insulation throughout the life of key battery system components,” continues Jirak. “It’s further proof of our commitment to supporting our customers through partnerships and product development to create, fuel and protect the innovations of the future.

In addition to boosting the safety of EV battery systems, AkzoNobel’s newly developed ‘one-spray’ technology provides resistance against thermal shock, water immersion and chemicals.

Adds Jirak:

Working with customers throughout the value chain has put us in a unique position to understand the needs of the market. Our strong global footprint means they can benefit from our ability to deliver consistency in product and service worldwide.

AkzoNobel’s Resicoat powder coatings range has been helping to solve the challenge of electrical insulation across various industries since the 1960s. In 2023, a dedicated range of Resicoat EV powder coatings was launched, which is specifically designed to help improve the safety and performance of EV components such as battery systems and electric motors.
