CO2 Waste Turned Into Floor Coatings

co2 coating feature

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is being used as an ingredient in an innovative new concrete paint developed by a British company

The new Carbonamine coating technology uses CO2 waste to ensure improved sustainability and performance. The cost-effective and solvent-free coating contains up to 18% CO2 waste and can be fast cured at low temperatures.

Carbonamine – a unique coating made with new patented technology combining the durability of polyurea/polyaspartic with an ingredient made from waste carbon dioxide – is now available to manufacturers seeking to create cost-effective, solvent-free, environmentally friendly coating products.

Key points to note;

  • New coating technology
  • Contains up to 18% CO2 waste
  • Suitable for a range of coating types
  • Several coats can be applied in a day or overnight
  • Rapid cure, even at low temperatures
  • Cost-effective Solvent free and low viscosity
  • Range of products available for most applications

CO2 discharge reduction

This novel technology allows the inclusion of up to 18% of waste carbon dioxide, reducing CO2 discharge to the atmosphere. Carbonamine does not contain expensive low-viscosity isocyanates, meaning that coatings can be produced at a reduced cost.

The options for producing a range of coating types using Carbonamine are significant. Applications range from concrete and anti-corrosion primers to UV-resistant top coats, clear floor varnish for protecting decorative systems, and more. It is a new coating with patented technology that combines the durability of polyurea/polyaspartic with an ingredient made from waste carbon dioxide, allowing the inclusion of up to 18% of CO2 waste, and can be cured at low temperatures down to minus 5ºC.

Odourless and Solvent Free

Carbonamine does not contain expensive low-viscosity isocyanates and it is odourless, solvent free and non-flammable. Manufactures are therefore able to produce environmentally-friendly coatings at a reduced cost. Al for a wide range of applications including anti-corrosion primers, UV-resistant top coats and clear floor varnish for protecting decorative systems.

Carbonamine’s durability, flexibility, adhesion and abrasion resistance ensure ease of application also on damp substrates.

Substrates include;

  • Concrete
  • Aluminium
  • Wood
  • Steel

Says Carbonamine developer Richard Foster;

It’s well known that alkylene carbonates will react with primary (reactive) amines, and they are used in fast-curing polyurea spray systems and several other similar applications. However, only small amounts of alkylene carbonates were previously used in polyaspartic coatings, as it was thought that they wouldn’t react into the resin matrix.

Additionally, my work on Carbonamine revealed that when a catalyst is used to cause the alkylene carbonate to react into the resin system far larger quantities can be used. While large percentages of alkylene carbonates are not usually used in resin systems, Carbonamine employs up to 30 per cent propylene carbonate because it is a readily available, inexpensive commodity product. Alkylene carbonates have a very low viscosity similar to water, meaning that solvents are usually unnecessary.

About Carbonamine

Carbonamine is a terpolymer coating consisting of a sterically hindered amine. Its an isocyanate and an alkylene carbonate. It possess similar properties to polyurethane and polyaspartic coatings. However the presence of alkylene carbonates introduce significant advantages.

About Xymertec

Xymertec is a speciality manufacturer of resin flooring and wall tanking products. Founded in Cornwall it was a one man band for many years. A passion for problem solving with coatings solutions has been the company’s mission since day one. Xymertec has grown and relocated to Bromyard in Herefordshire.

Xymertec specialises in developing and manufacturing innovative resins and coatings for your flooring applications. The team of dedicated chemists embrace the very latest technical advancements. Their latest product, Carbonamine Rapid Cold Cure Primer, is an unpigmented, low solvent, two part polyurethane/ urea concrete primer. In cold conditions at temperatures as low as 0°c, it can be re-coat in 40 minutes. Its well suited to Cold Storage facilities.

The Products

Carbonamine Rapid Prime

carbonamine rapid prime
Carbonamine Rapid Prime is an unpigmented, low solvent, two part polyurethane/ urea concrete primer that in most conditions is ready to re-coat in 40 minutes, thanks to the use of Advanced Cure Technology. It has a long pot life but when applied is quickly cured by the action of atmospheric moisture. Xymertol Rapid Prime will quickly develop a bond to concrete that is stronger than the concrete itself.

Carbonamine Rapid Prime can be used for priming and sealing porosity in concrete, masonry and other non metallic substrates before coating with polyurea spray, polyurethane or epoxy coatings, mortars or screeds.

Carbonamine Bell Metal

carbonamine bell metal
Rapid Cure, Modified Polyurea Pigmented Coating.

Carbonamine Bell Metal is a rapid curing, two pack modified polyurea coating that is available in a range of colours. It has a long pot life but quickly cures to a hard, but slightly flexible surface that is extremely abrasion resistant. Its long pot life and quick cure allows two coats to be applied to small areas from a single mix. This attribute saves time and material. It is ideal for use on floors, ships decks and in other high wear situations where rapid return to service is required.

Floors can be prepared, several coats of Carbonamine Bell Metal applied and the premises returned to service within six hours. Substrates must be prepared and primed correctly. Steel and other ferrous metals should be primed with Armourguard ST while concrete, timber and most other substrates can be primed with Carbonamine Rapid Prime.

Carbonamine Bell Metal can be applied by brush, roller or by airless spray.
